Mrs Au (Mrs. Au Ip Lai Yin, Clinical Psychologist of Family Health Service, Department of Health) : When parents face their children's behaviour problems, like tantrums and whining, they are often frustrated. Such behaviours are really very common. The Department of Health conducted a survey in 2003 targeting parents with a 4-year-old child. The results revealed that 10% of respondents thought their children had significant behaviour problems. These behaviour problems included disobedience, tantrums, destroying objects, conflicts with peers or siblings, as well as being overactive and inattentive.

Scene: A table indicating that the higher the score in child's behaviour problems, the higher the score in parenting stress.

Mrs Au: The survey also found a positive relationship between children's behaviour problems and the level of parenting stress.

Mrs Au: To enhance parenting confidence, improve parent-child relationships
and reduce children's behaviour problems, the evidence-based Triple P has been introduced to all Maternal and Child Health Centres. The programme was developed by the University of Queensland. Parents who have parenting difficulties with children aged from 2 and a half to 5 years old, may enroll.

Mrs Au: This is a group programme. Individual sessions can also be provided according to parents' situations. All Triple P facilitators are accredited by the Positive Parenting Programme of the University of Queensland. Right inside there is a group of parents attending the programme. How about we go inside and see what it's like.

Scene: A MCHC nurse is running the group with parents.

Heading: First Session: Positive Parenting

Narrator: In the first session, the facilitator will introduce the five principles of positive parenting to parents.

Heading: Five Principles of Positive Parenting:

  • Ensuring a safe and interesting environment
  • Having a positive learning environment
  • Using assertive discipline
  • Having realistic expectations
  • Taking care of yourself as a parent

Narrator: Another focus is to let the parents understand the causes of children's behaviour problems so as to help them in setting their goals for change.

Heading: Causes of Children's Behaviour Problems:

  • Genetics
  • Family environment
  • Influences outside the home

Heading: Second Session: Helping Children Develop

  • Building a good parent-child relationship
  • Encouraging desirable behaviours
  • Teaching new skills and behaviours

Narrator: In the second session “Helping Children Develop”, we will see how parents build a good parent-child relationship as a solid foundation for parenting. We will also see how to encourage children's desirable behaviours, so that the chances of disobedience decrease.

Heading: Third session: Managing Misbehavior

Narrator: The third session is on managing children's misbehavior. The facilitator will teach the seven parenting strategies.

Heading: Use of Seven Strategies:

  • Setting clear ground rules
  • Using directed discussion
  • Using planned ignoring
  • Giving clear and calm instructions
  • Backing up instructions with logical consequences
  • Using quiet time
  • Using time out

Heading: Forth Session: Planning Ahead

  • Identifying high-risk situations
  • Designing planned activities routine

Narrator: After learning all these parenting strategies, the facilitator will help the parents integrate and apply the strategies flexibly, to plan ahead for the high-risk situations in the fourth session.

Scene: A MCHC nurse is conducting a phone follow-up session and recording the progress of parents.

Mrs. Au: After the fourth session, there will be three to four individual phone consultations where the facilitator will guide the parents to implement the parenting strategies and to solve the problems encountered in application.

Mrs Au: Triple P consists of four group sessions. The facilitators will use different teaching modes to facilitate parents' learning.

Narrator: The interactive programme includes a talk from the facilitator, video watching, small group discussion and role play. Homework will be assigned at the end of each session.

Narrator: At the end of the programme, parents will be awarded a certificate if their attendance reaches 75% or above.

Mrs. Au: Right before and after the programme, parents need to fill in a questionnaire to evaluate its effectiveness. From the outcome evaluation, Triple P can help reduce children's behaviour problems and parenting stress, enhance parenting confidence, reduce ineffective parenting styles and improve the parents' relationship. Since the introduction of Triple P, parents have found the programme helpful. These are some of their thoughts:

Scene: A table indicating the changes in scores of different measures before and after the programme.

Mum A: Joining this programme helped me a lot in disciplining my child. You must sit through the whole course to make it work. Don't believe your problems can be fixed in one or two sessions. It won't happen all at once.

Dad A: There are many skills in the Triple P which are quite effective. I will definitely continue using some of the tips and techniques we learned during the course as they seem to work really well with my kids, like using quiet time or time out when kids have naughty behaviours. Compared to shouting at them or punishment, they're more effective.

Mum B: After Triple P, I realise that I need to spend more time talking with my son and to praise him.

Mum C: After attending Triple P, it seems that…our home's peaceful, the atmosphere's better and my husband feels the same. In the past I would… I would deal with her behavioural problems by shouting at her really loudly and she would respond just by yelling back at me. My husband joined in and our house filled with noises. It was so annoying, I was sick of it. The most obvious change after attending Triple P is my home is far more peaceful and calm. Behavioural problems still occur, but the key is how I face and solve them. Triple P taught me to use a calm way, like rewards and a more positive way to discipline my child. The skills I learned have contributed to a much more relaxed family environment.

Narrator: If you want to join this programme or have further enquiries, you may visit any Maternal and Child Health Centre in person or access the Family Health Service Website.
