Timely vaccination for protecting children from measles infection
Timely vaccination is very important for protecting children from measles infection. According to latest figures from the World Health Organization, there has been a recent upsurge in measles cases worldwide, including many European countries and parts of South East Asia. The Centre for Health Protection also received suspected / confirmed measles cases involving people with recent travel to neighbouring countries such as Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.
Parents are urged to keep their children up-to-date with measles vaccination, and ensure their non-immune domestic helpers/caregivers are fully vaccinated if they have not done so. Pregnant women and women preparing for pregnancy who are not immune to measles as well as children aged under one year who are not due for the first dose of the Measles, Mumps & Rubella (MMR) combined vaccine under the Hong Kong Childhood Immunisation Programme (HKCIP) are advised not to travel to places with outbreaks of measles.
Measles is a highly infectious airborne disease. It can be transmitted by airborne droplets or direct contact with nasal or throat secretions of infected persons, and, less commonly, by articles soiled with nose and throat secretions. Vaccination remains the most effective preventive measure. One dose of measles-containing vaccine is 93% effective against measles while two doses are 97% effective. Currently, two doses of measles-containing vaccine are offered at 12 months and 18 months of age under the HKCIP.
Besides being vaccinated against measles, parents should take the following measures to prevent infection:
- Maintain good personal and environmental hygiene;
- Maintain good indoor ventilation;
- Keep hands clean and wash hands properly;
- Wash hands when they are dirtied by respiratory secretions, such as after sneezing;
- Cover the nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing and dispose of nasal and mouth discharge properly;
- Clean used toys and furniture properly; and
- Persons with measles should be kept out of school until four days from the appearance of a rash to prevent the spread of the infection to non-immune persons.
For more information on measles, parents may visit the CHP's measles thematic page. To learn more about news of measles outbreaks outside Hong Kong, please visit the website of the DH's Travel Health Service

eHealth Registration and electronic health record
The Family Health Service encourages parents help arrange for their infants and young children to register with “eHealth”, so that their children can start building up an electronic immunisation record (as well as a personal lifelong electronic health record) from an early age and acquire coherent healthcare services as they grow up. The vaccination records of various government vaccination programmes can be stored and accessed via the "eHealth" mobile application for flexible use as necessary in daily life, thereby saving the trouble of handling paper records and avoiding the risk of losing such records. Please visit the website or call the “eHealth” hotline at 3467 6300 for more details. The hotline service runs from 9am to 9pm, from Monday to Friday (except public holidays).
